Steven McCall Step Forward

Background

Steven worked as a gardener and handyman for 21 years, his only job since leaving school. After becoming unemployed, he found it difficult to secure new work. To help him find work, the Department for Work and Pensions referred him to CEIS Ayrshire for support.

Employment Support

Ian was assigned as Steven’s Key Worker. Eager to return to work quickly, Steven worked closely with Ian to develop a tailored action plan aimed at helping him find meaningful employment. Ian supported Steven in creating a CV and uploading it to job sites, while also arranging regular one-to-one meetings for ongoing guidance. Although motivated, Steven felt anxious about completing job applications and attending interviews.

With Ian’s support, Steven gained a renewed sense of confidence. He began applying for roles he felt suited his skills and even stepped outside his comfort zone by exploring different types of jobs. Although he received several interview offers for a range of positions and wasn’t initially successful, his confidence remained strong. Each experience became a valuable learning opportunity, helping him grow and improve.

Step Forward

Steven enrolled our new 6-week pilot programme called Step Forward, developed by our Skills and Training team to offer in-depth support for individuals facing long-term unemployment. The course was designed to help participants build confidence, develop a positive mindset, increase self-awareness, and gain a clearer understanding of their skills and strengths.

With a focus on pre-employment support, Step Forward helped Steven boost his confidence even further and better prepare himself for future job interviews.

Securing Successful Employment

After completing the course, Steven was referred to our Business Services Team for more targeted job search support and tailored employment advice. His determination paid off when he successfully secured part-time work as a cleaner with DSM in Dalry.

Steven Comments

Steven provided feedback about his experience with us.

“The initial contact and the support received were both excellent. I improved my interview skills and wouldn’t change anything about the programme, it was very well organised, and I had a good time with everyone involved.

CEIS Ayrshire really has improved my chances of finding a job and gave great encouragement. I felt very well supported and encouraged to try new things in finding employment.

Thanks to Ian, Gary, Joan, and everyone at CEIS Ayrshire.”
