How Mark Secured a Job as a Warehouse Operative

Background

Mark Smith, a young client referred by his work coach at Saltcoats Job Centre, had been out of work for over two years. He was seeking a hands-on role in labouring, warehousing, or other practical fields. Some of these roles required a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card, which he did not have. Through our employability programme, Mark accessed tailored support, including employability assistance, training, and financial guidance, to help him secure sustainable employment.

Employability Support

Steven, a Key Worker from our Youth Team, was assigned to support Mark in overcoming barriers to employment. Together, they developed an action plan, which included:

  • CV Support – Mark attended our CV workshop, where he received guidance on improving his CV.
  • Online Training – He was registered on our TrainMe platform to complete an electrical safety course, enhancing his employability.
  • Financial Advice – Steven referred Mark to Christians Against Poverty (CHAP) for assistance with money management.
  • CSCS Card Preparation – Mark required a CSCS card for certain roles, so additional support was provided to help him achieve this qualification.

To further enhance his job prospects, Mark was also registered on our DevelopMe platform. This provided him with access to a CV checker, an interview simulator, and a variety of job search and skills development resources.

Job Opportunity

An opportunity became available at West Coast Furniture Bank for a driver’s mate/warehouse operative position. Steven facilitated Mark’s application and interview process. Due to scheduling conflicts, our Business Services Officer, Martine, arranged an alternative interview time to accommodate Mark’s availability. He attended the interview, demonstrated his suitability for the role, and successfully secured the position.

Outcome

Mark started his new role at West Coast Furniture Bank on 7 January. Following his placement, Steven maintained contact to check on his progress. Mark reported that he was enjoying the role, staying busy, and working hard.

Mark needed support with studying for his CITB test to obtain his CSCS card. Steven advised him to download the CITB Operatives and Specialists test app, with the cost of the app covered by us. Mark continues to work towards achieving his CSCS certification, which will further expand his employment opportunities.
