Roan’s Journey to a Promising Career

Background

Roan registered with CEIS Ayrshire’s employability programme in mid-October 2023. Unsure of his career direction but eager to explore his options. He enrolled in the Level Up training course to gain support and guidance in identifying the right path for his future.

Level Up Programme: Building Essential Skills

During the Level Up programme, Roan worked hard on enhancing his everyday skills and researching potential career choices that matched his personal strengths and interests. Through this structured support, he learned effective job-searching techniques and set his sights on careers that felt like a good fit for him. Roan’s efforts were rewarded when he successfully achieved the SQA qualification in Exploring the Workplace at SCQF Level 2.

Work Placement Success

Roan successfully secured a placement with James Fre Ltd with the help of our Business Services team, who source local placements for our programme candidates. This 2-week work experience was an important factor in Roan’s development, showing his dedication and enthusiasm in the workplace. The company provided glowing feedback on his performance:

“Roan has been there early every day, working well with the engineers and asking lots of questions. Roan seems to have a real focus on his future and had inquired about pre-apprenticeships. He really made the most of the work placement opportunity and impressed the engineers he was working with.”

This experience not only gave Roan a taste of the industry but also sparked a keen interest in Gas Engineering and Plumbing.

Now that Roan got experience, he sought after further opportunities to enhance his learning within gas engineering and plumbing.

Exploring Further Education Opportunities

Inspired to build on the momentum from his placement, Roan expressed interest in furthering his education to improve his job prospects. CEIS Ayrshire supported him in writing a strong personal statement for his college application. Roan applied for a 6-month Pre-Apprenticeship course in Gas Engineering and Plumbing at Ayr College. His hard work paid off when he was accepted into the programme, starting with an induction on Friday, January 19th, and officially beginning classes on Monday, January 22nd.

Next Steps and Future Ambitions

Roan is already looking ahead to his future and plans to apply for a 4-year apprenticeship with James Frew, scheduled to start in August. This structured approach to his career development, combined with Roan’s motivation, sets him up for a promising future in his chosen field.

Roan reflects positively on his experience with CEIS Ayrshire:

“I think registering with CEIS has massively helped me choose a career to pursue and explore my options. They have never given less than 100% when it came to supporting me with whatever I needed, and I encourage anyone who’s struggling with finding a job, or unsure what to pursue, to give CEIS a chance.”

Roan’s journey with CEIS Ayrshire highlights how the right support from employability services and engaged employers can empower young people to develop their skills and discover their career aspirations. His dedication and proactive approach, combined with a strong support system, have guided him toward a promising career path.
