Case Study

Rising to the Occasion: Gary’s Bagel Basket Success

Gary Clarke recently re-engaged with our employability programme after finishing his previous role. Motivated and ready to explore opportunities across sectors, he took proactive steps to move his career forward.

Although highly motivated, Gary needed support to navigate job applications, refine his CV, boost confidence, and prepare for interviews. He wanted a role that suited his skills and ambitions but needed guidance to make his applications competitive.

Support Provided

Working one-to-one with Nina, his keyworker, Gary received:

  • CV review and updates
  • Guidance on job applications and registering with recruitment sites
  • Observation of current vacancies and advice on suitable roles
  • Confidence, applications, and interview skills workshops

He also continued working through his food hygiene courses to strengthen his skills for employment opportunities.

Outcome

Gary applied for multiple roles, including a warehouse position and trainee roles in food and retail. His persistence and preparation led to a one-week work trial with The Bagel Basket in Largs, funded through the Personal Recruitment Incentive (PRI), a grant that helps employers create opportunities for our clients. This gave Gary valuable hands-on experience and the chance to showcase his skills to his new employer.

The work trial proved to be a great success, and as a result, Gary has now secured a six-month placement with The Bagel Basket, with the potential to be kept on permanently. He has made a strong start in his new role, demonstrating both skill and motivation. His engagement with the programme helped him gain confidence, refine his applications, and access training that supports his long-term career goals.

Employer Feedback:

Scott Fulton from The Bagel Basket praised Gary’s performance and the support he received:

He’s been a great addition to the team. CEIS Ayrshire fully supported the recruitment and onboarding process, and I would very likely recommend this service to other employers.

Scott also noted that Gary shows potential to progress into a more advanced role and suggested further training in baking to help him develop in his current position.
