Kai-Roy’s Opportunity with Struan Boat Building
Kai-Roy Crawford registered with our employability programme keen to build a future in a hands-on career. With a clear interest in joinery, carpentry, and landscaping, he was motivated to gain experience and move into employment that matched his skillset.
The Challenge
Although Kai-Roy had strong practical interests and experience, including volunteering as a landscaper with his dad and studying an apprenticeship in joinery and carpentry, he needed support to present his skills confidently to employers and take the next step into paid work. He was looking for guidance on CVs, applications, and interview preparation to help him stand out.
The Support Provided
Working closely with his keyworker, Steven Shefield, Kai-Roy received tailored employability support, including:
- CV and cover letter development
- A skills and qualities workshop
- Applications and interview skills workshops
- Referral to a manual handling course through TrainMe
- Ongoing one-to-one support through the Youth Hub
The Turning Point and Outcome
Martine Brown, our Business Services Team Lead, worked closely with employers to identify suitable opportunities for Kai-Roy. She forwarded Kai-Roy’s CV to one of our Personal Recruitment Incentive (PRI) vacancies with Struan Boat Building, located at Fairley Quay. The employer was keen to meet Kai-Roy, inviting him to visit the workshop, learn more about the role, and discuss his interests and training.
Following positive feedback from this first meeting, Kai-Roy was offered a one-week work trial to demonstrate his skills in a real working environment.
Kai-Roy showed enthusiasm and professionalism at the work trial which impressed the employer. As a result, he was offered a job with Struan Boat Building, putting him on the path towards a meaningful career.
