What You Need To Know About The CSCS Labourer Card

The CSCS Labourer Card, also known as the CSCS Green Card, is a certification that signifies your knowledge of health and safety within a construction environment. Holding one of these cards means you are qualified to work on a construction site within the UK. The Labourer Card is valid for only 5 years. Candidates will need to re-sit the CITB test and apply for a new card once their current one expires.

The application process for a CSCS card can be confusing to navigate, but we are here to help make it as easy as possible. In this guide we will walk you through everything you need to know when applying for your CSCS Labourer’s Card.  This includes the necessary qualifications and the required documentation.

What is CSCS

CSCS stands for the Construction Skills Certification Scheme, it is the leading skills certification scheme in the UK. CSCS cards are proof that the individual holds the necessary qualifications needed to work within the construction sector and has passed the necessary Health and Safety tests to hold a card. Although it is not a legal requirement to have a CSCS card, most companies operating within the UK require their employees to have one.

Required Qualifications for the CSCS Labourer Card

Before you can get your CSCS card, you need to pass the CITB test and hold one of the following qualifications:

  • The Level 1 (Scotland Level 4) Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment

  • The Scottish Level 5 REHIS Elementary Health and Safety Certificate

  • NOCN/CSkills Awards Construction Health and Safety (F/618/0738) unit.

  • Or an alternative qualification approved by CSCS. You can see the list of alternative qualifications on the CSCS website.

As a certified test and training centre, CEIS Ayrshire has the capability to deliver the training and the test for the SCQF Level 4 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment.

CITB Test

If you hold any of the above qualifications, you can proceed to sit your CITB Health and Safety Environment test. This test is multiple choice and has a total of 50 questions covering all aspects of health and safety in construction, you need to score 45 out 50 to pass. The test is also taken on a computer and is often called a touch-screen test.

The test is taken under exam conditions, which means an invigilator will be monitoring you, and CCTV will be in operation to ensure compliance with testing conditions.

CITB Mock Test

If you don’t feel you are ready to take the CITB test, there are options to undertake a mock test to help you prepare. We recommend that candidates do not take any of the free online mock tests. These alternative options often do not cover the relevant questions that is in the official CITB test

You can download the CITB: Op/Spec app for your phone from the Google Play Store or the Apple Store. The app costs £6.99 and covers all the questions that you can find in the final test. Please note that there are more than 50 questions with different variations, the questions in the final test may not be the same as the mock test. We recommend taking the mock test multiple times and achieving at least 45 out of 50 questions before sitting the official CITB Health and Safety Environment test.
