Sector Based Work Academy Programme

Introduction.

Securing work can be challenge for a lot of job seekers, particularly for the ones that lack the experience of the relevant qualifications. Many job roles require candidates to have relevant experience or certifications that they might not have. Construction companies will require workers to hold a CSCS card, while the hospitality industry or any premise that sells alcohol often require employees with a Personal Licence. These barriers can make it difficult for job seekers to get their foot in the door.

To address these challenges and help bridge the gap between job seekers and employers, we offer Sector-Based Work Academy Programmes (SWAPS). These programmes are designed with businesses and job seekers in mind. We look to see what skills and certifications businesses often require and we equip candidates with those skills and certifications. SWAP’s provided candidates with real world experience to improve their job prospects while providing businesses with work ready candidates.

What is The Sector Based Work Academy Programme.

A Sector-Based Work Academy Programme is a structured four-week training and work experience programme designed to prepare individuals for employment for specific sectors. SWAP’s provide candidates the skills and experience needed to thrive in their chosen sector while giving employers access to a pool of job ready candidates.

Our SWAPs comprises of 2 components, in centre training and hands on practical experience via a work placement.

Weeks 1 & 2: Candidates undertake interactive training within the training centre. We register them on TrainMe, our online training platform, which offers a variety of industry-relevant courses to help candidates learn essential skills for their chosen field. During the 2 weeks they will also partake in various workshops to improve their interview skills, CV writing, and overall job readiness. Our Skills and Training Team will guide learners through the 2 weeks and support them to reach their potential.

Weeks 3 & 4: Our Business Services Team will arrange 2-week work placement with local employers, allowing candidates to gain hands-on experience in a real working environment. Sometimes employers will use this placement to see if the candidates would fit in well with their team and potentially offer a job at the end of the programme.

Success Stories

David, one of our clients, approached us for support in securing work in the construction industry, specifically in warehousing. With guidance from his key worker, Steven, David updated his CV and completed several online training courses. During their discussions, Steven introduced David to our upcoming Construction Sector-Based Work Academy Programme.

Through this four-week programme, David received training from our team and earned his CSCS card, significantly improving his employability in the construction sector. Following his two-week work placement, David and Steven worked together to explore job opportunities. Their efforts led them to a position at Millar Callaghan Engineering Services, where David applied and successfully secured a job.

Similarly, Finn, another client seeking employment support, worked with his key worker, Lynne, to identify suitable opportunities. After discussing his interests, Finn decided to join our Hospitality Sector-Based Work Academy Programme, believing it aligned well with his skills.

After completing two weeks of training, Finn undertook a two-week placement at Duncan’s Bar and Bistro. His dedication and enthusiasm impressed the team, leading to a job offer. Finn is now a fully paid member of the team and thriving in the hospitality industry.

Reflecting on his experience, Finn said:

“Working with CEIS Ayrshire has been a wonderful experience and is something I’m truly grateful for. I would never have pictured myself to be working in the hospitality industry, so I’m really thankful to them for getting me involved in it, especially since I’m now doing full-time hospitality work and am loving it.”
