Women Into Construction
Course Overview
The Women into Construction course launched on Monday, 20th of November 2023, aiming to empower women interested in the construction industry. Five clients enrolled in the programme; each candidate expressed an interest for pursuing careers in construction. The course was structured to provide practical, accredited training, valuable industry insights, and hands-on experiences to equip the participants with essential skills and knowledge.
Training and Certifications
Throughout the course, the participants engaged in online, accredited training to build their understanding of working on site. The training covered:
- Manual Handling
- Working at Heights
- Fire Safety Awareness
- Asbestos Awareness
These certifications introduced participants to key safety principles, preparing them for a safe and knowledgeable start in the construction environment.
Site Visit: Montgomerie Park Primary School
On Friday, 24th November, Erica, our Business Services Officer, led the group on an insightful site visit to Montgomerie Park in Irvine, where Robertsons Construction is currently building a new primary school. The visit included:
- Site Induction and Presentation
The group received a comprehensive induction and a presentation outlining the project’s development. This provided the participants with a clear understanding of the scope and scale of construction projects.
- Tour and Detailed Site Discussion
Martin, one of the site managers, guided the group through the construction site. He explained various aspects of the build in detail. For many of the participants, this was their first time on an active construction site, giving them a valuable insight into how construction projects come to life through blueprints.
Practical Skill Development and CSCS Card
In the second week, the group further developed their employability and interview skills. Kelly and Laura, Social Impact Managers from Robertsons Construction, conducted mock interviews. These mock interviews provide the participants with valuable interview practice, boosting their confidence and readying them for possible future opportunities within the construction industry.
To support their journey into the construction industry, all participants successfully obtained their CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) cards. As a certified CITB test and training centre, we provided the group with a full-day course, enabling them to achieve the SQA award, a prerequisite for taking the CITB test and earning their CSCS card. This card is essential, as most construction companies across the UK require their employees to hold one.
Employer Engagement Session
On Friday, 1st December, an employer engagement session was held to facilitate direct interaction between the clients and industry professionals. Representatives included:
- Claire from McLaughlin Construction
- Kelly from Robertsons Construction
During the session, the clients engaged enthusiastically, expressing their interest by asking questions. Through this session they gained a better understanding of the various roles and opportunities available in the construction industry.
Placement Opportunities
The course offered candidates the opportunity to undertake work experience placements. One candidate secured a placement with James Frew, focusing on joinery while another client began a placement with a contractor from Robertsons Construction, specialising in bricklaying
Impact and Outcomes
The Women into Construction course has effectively equipped candidates with the skills, confidence, and practical experience needed to enter the construction industry. By offering accredited training, site visits, and placements through our strong partnerships with local employers, we provide participants with a solid foundation for future careers in construction. One of our candidates even secured a job offer during the course and will officially begin her new role in the construction sector at the start of the new year.
