Helping Kirsty Secure a Job in Admin
Engaging With Kirsty
Kirsty re-engaged with CEIS Ayrshire after leaving her previous job. She needed her CV updated and was looking for further employability support. Being a single parent, Kirsty needed a job that would suit her circumstances. She expressed that part-time would be best but could take full-time if the hours could work around her family. Ian, Kirsty’s Key Worker, arranged a meeting to discuss her career goals.
Through these discussions, Kirsty indicated that she wanted to find a career outside of the hospitality sector, where she worked previously, and was open to looking into new areas of work. She lived in the Garnock Valley where public transport is poor; fortunately, she had her own transport which helped open up more opportunities.
Supporting Kirsty Towards Her Career Goals
After Ian quickly updated Kirsty’s CV, they commenced a series of one-to-one meetings where they discussed suitable jobs. Ian helped upload Kirsty’s CV onto employment websites to make it easier to apply for jobs and supported her with writing cover letters. Through these meetings, Kirsty expressed an interest in administration. However, she mentioned that any role would suit her until any admin opportunities arose in the future.
Kirsty and Ian felt that she was ready to move into a more senior job role as a supervisor. To support this, Ian assigned Kirsty some online accredited and non-accredited courses through TrainMe, our online training platform. The courses focused on business skills, helping to increase Kirsty’s confidence and to realise how her skills have developed over the years.
Ian offered support with job searching, but Kirsty was happy to search for work on her own. Ian provided support in the background with regular meetings to discuss progress and offer help when needed. Kirsty was receiving poor responses for the jobs she applied for and was unsuccessful in the interviews that she attended. This frustrated Kirsty, but she was resilient, confident that an opportunity would arise.
Placement With North Ayrshire Council
An opportunity arose with North Ayrshire Council for a 6-month funded work placement. The role aimed to assist parents looking for work, offering them positions in administration. Kirsty unfortunately was not able to attend the information session and contacted her key worker to explain. Ian was able to contact the organiser, explain the situation, and arrange an interview for Kirsty for the following day.
Ian discussed with Kirsty that a funded PC Passport course was being offered by Ayrshire College. If she were unsuccessful with the work placement, this would be a good opportunity to get a recognised qualification. This qualification would assist her, as it is usually essential for admin jobs.
Fortunately, the interview for the work placement was successful and she was offered a place. Additionally, Kirsty will be undertaking the PC Passport course with Ayrshire College. Once completed she will start her 6-month work placement with North Ayrshire Council.
