Women into Construction

We ran our Women into Construction course that started on Monday 20th of November. We had 5 clients attend this course who all has an interest of getting in the Construction Industry.

During the Course our clients undertook online accredited training in Manual Handling, Working at Heights, Fire Safety Awareness and Asbestos Awareness to give them an introduction to things they may come across when working on site or being employed in a trade.

Site Visit

On Friday 24th of November, Erica, our Business Services Officer took the group to Montgomerie Park in Irvine to visit the new Montgomerie Park Primary School that is currently being built by contractors, Robertsons Construction. During this we got a site induction and a presentation to show us how the build started and the progress that was being made. We then got a tour of the site with a very detailed talk about certain aspects of the current build by one of the site managers, Martin. As this was some of the group’s first time on a building site, it was really interesting for them to see how things work and how projects come to life from blueprints and drawings.

On the second week of the course, Kelly and Laura, who are the Social Impact Managers for Robertsons Construction conducted mock interviews for the group to give them experience of interviewing in front of a construction-based employer. The group also gained their CSCS card which gives them a Health and Safety qualification for working on a construction site.

Employer Session and Placement

On Friday 1st of December, we held an employer session from the group where the clients could speak to an employer and ask questions about the industry. Claire from Mclaughlin Construction and Kelly from Robertsons Construction attended this session and the group got involved with asking questions and getting a better insight into all the different jobs within Construction.

For the placement section of the course 1 client is working with James Frew on a construction site with a focus on Joinery and another client is working with a contractor from Robertsons with a focus on bricklaying. One client was also offered a job during her time on the course and will be starting this in the new year.
